How to Combat Loneliness in a Senior Assisted-Living Community

How to Combat Loneliness in a Senior Assisted-Living Community

October 31st, 2021

It is not unusual for seniors to feel lonely. But being in a senior assisted-living community is a good thing, and it’s easier to combat loneliness when you are surrounded by your peers and a caring staff.

Here are our tips on keeping loneliness at bay when you are in an assisted-living environment.

Schedule of Events

An assisted-living community will have a regular monthly calendar of activities. See what the community has to offer and start participating. Whether the activities are by video conferencing, inside, outside, or as part of a scheduled outing, try out the different activities.

Not everything may appeal to you, but surely some of the activities will. These activities are an easy way to meet other residents and make new friends.

Stay in Touch

Keep in close contact with your already established friends and relatives by phone or video conferencing. A reassuring voice from someone you know and trust is always welcome. What’s important is to not isolate yourself from others.

Eat Well

One of the great benefits of being in an assisted-living community is the opportunity to eat well and with others. Eating can be a social activity as well, so don’t skip any meals. And as cliché as it sounds, we are what we eat. You will feel better if you eat better.

We provide an assisted-living environment in Red Deer, Alberta. Our staff are trained to watch for and be sensitive to loneliness in residents. In a well-run assisted care community, staff will be trained to help residents make the adjustment to living there. If you live in an assisted-living environment, reach out to your staff if you are having any difficulties.
